Skinvive in Calgary

Skinviveat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable that improves the hydration, smoothness and glow of the skin itself. It adds no volume and changes no contour. It is the first product of its kind approved in Canada, and it is for patients who want their skin to look better rather than their face to look different. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, performs every treatment himself.

What it is

A skin booster, not a filler.

Skinvive is made by the same company as Juvederm and is hyaluronic acid, but it is formulated and used differently. It is injected into the skin rather than beneath it.

Microdroplets in the dermisTiny deposits of a very soft, lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel are placed in the mid-layer of the skin across the treated area, twenty or more per cheek. Each holds water in the tissue around it.
Hydration from withinThe result is skin that is better hydrated, smoother and more reflective of light, with finer texture and less crepiness. Patients describe it as a lasting glow. Moisturiser works on the surface; Skinvive works in the dermis.
Six monthsEffect is established at one month and lasts about six months from a single session. Reversible with hyaluronidase, like all hyaluronic acid products, though this is almost never needed.
Skinvive or filler

Skin quality versus volume.

Skinvive is often confused with dermal filler because both are hyaluronic acid. They do different things and are frequently used together.

Skinvive

Glow, hydration and texture

Improves the quality of the skin surface. Adds no volume and does not change the shape of the face. Suits anyone whose skin looks dull, dry, crepey or tired, at any age.

Filler

Structure and contour

Restores lost volume and defines a specific feature. Does not change the texture or hydration of the skin above it.

Juvederm
Skinvive or Skinboosters

Comparable products

Restylane Skinboosters work on the same principle and are used on the neck, chest and hands as well as the face. Skinvive is approved for the cheeks and has a particularly smooth, low-swelling formulation. Dr. Kuzel uses both.

Complementary

Clear + Brilliant and other resurfacing treat texture, pores and pigment from the surface down. Skinvive hydrates from within. The combination is a common plan for overall skin quality.

Why a dermatologist

Skin assessment and the right plan.

Dull, dry or textured skin has many causes, and not all of them are treated by hydration. A dermatologist identifies which is which before anything is injected.

Diagnosis firstRosacea, seborrhoeic dermatitis, melasma and sun damage all make skin look poor, and each needs its own treatment. Dr. Kuzel assesses the skin as a dermatologist before recommending Skinvive, and treats the underlying condition where there is one.
Correct depthSkinvive belongs in the mid-dermis. Too shallow and it produces visible papules for days; too deep and it does nothing. Placement is by many fine, shallow injections at a consistent depth.
The whole planSkinvive is one part of skin quality. Sun protection, prescription retinoids, resurfacing and neuromodulators each contribute. Dr. Kuzel builds the plan around what the skin needs rather than around one product.
CoverageSkinvive is cosmetic and not covered by Alberta Health Care. Pricing is by syringe and is quoted at consultation before any treatment.
Areas treated

Where Skinvive is used.

Skinvive is approved for the cheeks, where the effect on skin quality is most visible. Other areas are treated with Skinvive or with a comparable product according to the area.

Approved indication

Cheeks

The full cheek from below the eye to the jawline, one syringe per side. This is where the glow is most visible and where the approval studies were done.

Established use

Lower face and perioral

Fine crepe lines around the mouth and on the chin, treated with small deposits.

Established use

Forehead and temples

Fine surface texture on the forehead and the thin skin of the temples.

Neck, décolletage and hands

Treated with Restylane Skinboosters, which are used for these areas. The choice is made at consultation.

Aftercare and safety

What to expect after injection.

Skinvive has one of the lightest recovery profiles of any injectable. Small bumps on the day are expected and are gone within a day or two.

After treatment

  • Small bumps at each injection point for 24 to 48 hours; these are the product settling and are normal
  • Mild redness for a few hours; bruising, if any, small and brief
  • Avoid makeup for 12 hours and strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas for 24 hours
  • Do not massage the area
  • Sun protection daily; the effect of the treatment is undone by sun damage
  • Not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with active infection, rosacea flare or cold sores at the site

Booking and fees

No referral is needed. Skinvive is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation, and the price is confirmed before anything is injected.

What to expect

Expected outcomes.

The bumps settle within two days and the skin begins to look hydrated within a week. The full effect, smoother texture, softer fine lines and a lasting glow, is established at one month. In the approval studies most patients reported a visible improvement in skin smoothness that lasted six months from a single treatment.

Skinvive does not lift, does not add volume and does not treat pigment, pores, or lines of expression. Those are addressed with filler, resurfacing and neuromodulators where wanted, and are often combined with Skinvive in the same plan.

The effect lasts about six months. Repeat treatment at that interval maintains it, and many patients time it to the seasons.

Questions

Questions about Skinvive, answered.

How much does Skinvive cost in Calgary?

Skinvive is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation. Both cheeks are usually two syringes. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

Is Skinvive a filler?

No. It is hyaluronic acid, like filler, but it is a very soft gel injected into the skin in tiny droplets to hydrate and smooth it. It adds no volume and does not change the shape of the face.

How long does Skinvive last?

About six months from a single treatment. Repeat treatment at that interval maintains the result.

When will I see results?

Hydration is noticeable within a week and the full effect is established at one month. The small bumps at the injection points settle within two days.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied and the product contains lidocaine. The injections are very fine and shallow. Most patients describe mild stinging.

Will there be downtime?

Small bumps at each injection point for one to two days, and mild redness for a few hours. Most patients return to normal activity the same day and wear makeup the next.

Who is Skinvive for?

Anyone whose skin looks dull, dry, crepey or tired, at any age. It is popular with patients in their thirties and forties who want better skin without changing their face, and with older patients alongside filler and resurfacing.

Skinvive or Restylane Skinboosters?

Both are skin boosters. Skinvive is approved for the cheeks and is noted for a smooth, low-swelling formulation. Skinboosters are used on the neck, chest and hands as well as the face. Dr. Kuzel uses both and chooses by area.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes. Skinvive is commonly combined with Botox or Dysport, with filler, and with Clear + Brilliant or other resurfacing, either at the same visit or in sequence. Dr. Kuzel plans the order.

Who performs the injections?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, performs all injections personally. He sees patients in English and Czech.
