Radiesse in Calgary

Radiesseat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite filler that gives volume on the day and then stimulates the skin to build collagen over the months that follow. It is firmest of the fillers and is used where structure is wanted: the jawline, chin, cheeks and hands. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, performs every injection himself.

What it is

Filler and collagen stimulator in one.

Radiesse is a gel carrying microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral found naturally in bone and teeth. It has been approved in Canada for facial volume since 2007 and for the hands since 2015.

Immediate volumeThe gel gives lift and structure on the day, like a hyaluronic acid filler but firmer, which suits areas where a defined edge is wanted.
Then collagenOver the following months the gel is absorbed and the microspheres act as a scaffold on which the body lays down its own collagen. The microspheres themselves are gradually broken down and cleared. What remains is your tissue, firmer than before.
Not reversibleRadiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase. That makes placement, depth and patient selection matter more than with hyaluronic acid filler, and is why it is a physician's treatment.
Radiesse, Sculptra or filler

Three tools for volume.

Each has a place. The choice depends on the area, on whether immediate or gradual change is wanted, and on whether reversibility matters to the patient.

Radiesse

Immediate structure plus collagen

Firm lift on the day, with collagen building afterward. Best for the jawline, chin, cheekbone and hands. Lasts twelve to eighteen months. Not reversible.

Sculptra

Gradual, diffuse collagen

Little on the day; volume builds over months across a whole area. Best for generalised volume loss and skin quality. Lasts two years or more. Not reversible.

Sculptra
Hyaluronic acid

Immediate, precise, reversible

Defines a specific structure on the day and can be dissolved if needed. The only choice for the lips and the under-eye area.

Juvederm
Diluted Radiesse

Skin quality

Mixed with saline and lidocaine and spread thinly under the skin, Radiesse is used to firm crepe skin on the neck, chest, arms, abdomen, knees and buttocks without adding volume.

Why a dermatologist

Depth, dilution and irreversibility.

Because Radiesse cannot be dissolved, the margin for error is narrower than with hyaluronic acid. That argues for a physician who knows the anatomy and uses the product where it belongs.

Vascular safetyRadiesse in an artery cannot be reversed with hyaluronidase. Dr. Kuzel places it deep, on bone, by cannula where that is safer, and avoids the high-risk areas of the nose, glabella and lips entirely.
Right area, right depthRadiesse belongs deep, on the periosteum or in the deep fat, in areas where a firm result is wanted. It is never used in the lips or the tear trough, where it produces visible lumps.
Dilution for skinFor skin quality on the neck, chest and body, Radiesse is diluted and placed superficially in a thin, even layer. Under-dilution in this plane produces nodules. Dr. Kuzel prepares the dilution to current guidance.
CoverageRadiesse is cosmetic and not covered by Alberta Health Care. Pricing is by syringe and is quoted at consultation before any treatment.
Areas treated

Where Radiesse is used.

Radiesse is used where a firm result is wanted, and on the body for skin quality. It is not used in the lips, under the eyes, the nose or between the brows.

Lower face

Jawline

The most common use. A firm product placed along the mandible restores a defined edge and reduces the appearance of jowls.

Lower face

Chin

Projection and length for a receding or short chin, in proportion to the rest of the profile.

Midface

Cheekbones

Lift and structure on the cheekbone, placed deep on bone. Used where a defined cheek rather than soft fullness is wanted.

Cheek filler
Hands

Backs of the hands

The approved product for hand rejuvenation. Restores the fullness that hides tendons and veins, with collagen building afterward.

Hand rejuvenation
Skin quality

Neck and décolletage

Diluted Radiesse in a thin layer firms crepe skin and softens the horizontal lines of the neck and the vertical lines of the chest.

Skin quality

Arms, abdomen, knees and buttocks

Diluted Radiesse for laxity and crepe texture on the body, often alongside skin tightening. Discussed at consultation.

Your visit

Consultation and treatment in one visit.

A Radiesse appointment takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Treatment is usually performed at the first visit once the plan is agreed.

ConsultationWhat concerns you, your medical history, previous filler, and whether you would want a result that can be reversed.
AssessmentDr. Kuzel assesses the face or the area as a whole and confirms that Radiesse, rather than another product, is the right tool.
Plan and consentAreas, amount, dilution, expected result, duration and risks, including that it is not reversible. The price is confirmed before treatment.
InjectionTopical anaesthetic; the product is mixed with lidocaine. Injection by cannula or needle, fifteen to thirty minutes.
Follow-upReview at two to four weeks once swelling has settled; the collagen effect is assessed at three months.
Aftercare and safety

What to expect after injection.

Swelling and bruising are the normal side effects. Serious complications are rare and are managed immediately.

After treatment

  • Swelling for two to five days; bruising, if any, for up to a week
  • Firmness in the treated area for the first two weeks as the gel integrates; massage only if instructed
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and pressure on the area for 24 to 48 hours
  • Makeup can be applied the next day
  • Diluted body treatments may show a brief mottled appearance that resolves within days
  • Contact the clinic immediately for skin that turns white, mottled or dusky, or unusual pain: these are signs of a blocked vessel and are treated at once
  • Not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection, or a history of keloid scarring

What to expect

Expected outcomes.

The volume is visible immediately and looks its best at two to four weeks once swelling has settled. Over the following three months the gel is absorbed and replaced by collagen, so the result is maintained and the tissue feels firmer.

Duration is twelve to eighteen months in the face and about twelve months in the hands. Diluted treatments for skin quality on the neck, chest and body are usually given as two sessions a few months apart, with the improvement in firmness building over three to six months and lasting a year or more.

Radiesse does not treat the lips, under-eye area, or lines of expression. Hyaluronic acid filler and neuromodulators do that, often in the same plan.

Questions

Questions about Radiesse, answered.

How much does Radiesse cost in Calgary?

Radiesse is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation. A jawline typically needs two to four syringes; hands one to two; diluted body treatments vary with the area. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

How long does Radiesse last?

Twelve to eighteen months in the face and about twelve months in the hands. The collagen the treatment stimulates outlasts the gel itself, so the tissue remains firmer even as the volume fades.

Radiesse or Sculptra?

Both stimulate collagen. Radiesse gives immediate volume and a firm result, which suits the jawline, chin and hands. Sculptra works gradually across a whole area and lasts longer, which suits generalised volume loss. They are sometimes combined.

Radiesse or Juvederm?

Juvederm and other hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible and can be used anywhere, including the lips and under the eyes. Radiesse is firmer, stimulates collagen, and is not reversible, so it is reserved for areas where a firm result is wanted and the anatomy is safe.

Can Radiesse be dissolved?

No. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase. It is broken down by the body over twelve to eighteen months. That is why it is placed only in areas where the result and the anatomy are predictable.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied and the product is mixed with lidocaine, so discomfort is mild. Cannula injection, used where appropriate, reduces both discomfort and bruising.

What are the risks?

Swelling, bruising and temporary firmness are common and resolve. Nodules are uncommon and are more likely with shallow placement, which is avoided. The serious risk is injection into a blood vessel, which is rare, is minimised by anatomical knowledge and technique, and is why Radiesse is not used in the nose, glabella or lips.

What is diluted Radiesse?

Radiesse mixed with saline and lidocaine and spread in a thin layer under the skin. Used this way it adds little volume and instead stimulates collagen to firm crepe skin on the neck, chest, arms, abdomen, knees and buttocks. Usually two sessions a few months apart.

Will it show on an X-ray?

Calcium hydroxylapatite is radio-opaque and can be seen on X-ray and CT for some months after treatment. It is easily distinguished from bone by a radiologist, but tell any physician ordering imaging that you have had Radiesse.

Who performs the injections?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, performs all injections personally. He sees patients in English and Czech.
