Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite filler that gives volume on the day and then stimulates the skin to build collagen over the months that follow. It is firmest of the fillers and is used where structure is wanted: the jawline, chin, cheeks and hands. Radiesse is a gel carrying microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral found naturally in bone and teeth. It has been approved in Canada for facial volume since 2007 and for the hands since 2015.
Each has a place. The choice depends on the area, on whether immediate or gradual change is wanted, and on whether reversibility matters to the patient.
Firm lift on the day, with collagen building afterward. Best for the jawline, chin, cheekbone and hands. Lasts twelve to eighteen months. Not reversible.
Little on the day; volume builds over months across a whole area. Best for generalised volume loss and skin quality. Lasts two years or more. Not reversible.
SculptraDefines a specific structure on the day and can be dissolved if needed. The only choice for the lips and the under-eye area.
JuvedermMixed with saline and lidocaine and spread thinly under the skin, Radiesse is used to firm crepe skin on the neck, chest, arms, abdomen, knees and buttocks without adding volume.
Because Radiesse cannot be dissolved, the margin for error is narrower than with hyaluronic acid. That argues for a physician who knows the anatomy and uses the product where it belongs.
Radiesse is used where a firm result is wanted, and on the body for skin quality. It is not used in the lips, under the eyes, the nose or between the brows.
The most common use. A firm product placed along the mandible restores a defined edge and reduces the appearance of jowls.
Projection and length for a receding or short chin, in proportion to the rest of the profile.
Lift and structure on the cheekbone, placed deep on bone. Used where a defined cheek rather than soft fullness is wanted.
Cheek fillerThe approved product for hand rejuvenation. Restores the fullness that hides tendons and veins, with collagen building afterward.
Hand rejuvenationDiluted Radiesse in a thin layer firms crepe skin and softens the horizontal lines of the neck and the vertical lines of the chest.
Diluted Radiesse for laxity and crepe texture on the body, often alongside skin tightening. Discussed at consultation.
A Radiesse appointment takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Treatment is usually performed at the first visit once the plan is agreed.
Swelling and bruising are the normal side effects. Serious complications are rare and are managed immediately.

The volume is visible immediately and looks its best at two to four weeks once swelling has settled. Over the following three months the gel is absorbed and replaced by collagen, so the result is maintained and the tissue feels firmer.
Duration is twelve to eighteen months in the face and about twelve months in the hands. Diluted treatments for skin quality on the neck, chest and body are usually given as two sessions a few months apart, with the improvement in firmness building over three to six months and lasting a year or more.
Radiesse does not treat the lips, under-eye area, or lines of expression. Hyaluronic acid filler and neuromodulators do that, often in the same plan.

Twelve to eighteen months in the face and about twelve months in the hands. The collagen the treatment stimulates outlasts the gel itself, so the tissue remains firmer even as the volume fades.
Both stimulate collagen. Radiesse gives immediate volume and a firm result, which suits the jawline, chin and hands. Sculptra works gradually across a whole area and lasts longer, which suits generalised volume loss. They are sometimes combined.
Juvederm and other hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible and can be used anywhere, including the lips and under the eyes. Radiesse is firmer, stimulates collagen, and is not reversible, so it is reserved for areas where a firm result is wanted and the anatomy is safe.
No. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase. It is broken down by the body over twelve to eighteen months. That is why it is placed only in areas where the result and the anatomy are predictable.
Topical anaesthetic is applied and the product is mixed with lidocaine, so discomfort is mild. Cannula injection, used where appropriate, reduces both discomfort and bruising.
Swelling, bruising and temporary firmness are common and resolve. Nodules are uncommon and are more likely with shallow placement, which is avoided. The serious risk is injection into a blood vessel, which is rare, is minimised by anatomical knowledge and technique, and is why Radiesse is not used in the nose, glabella or lips.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is radio-opaque and can be seen on X-ray and CT for some months after treatment. It is easily distinguished from bone by a radiologist, but tell any physician ordering imaging that you have had Radiesse.
