There are two ways to reduce a pocket of fat without surgery: freeze it or dissolve it. Both work on the right patient and neither is weight loss. This page compares them against each other and against liposuction, so you know what each removes, how long it takes, what it costs in downtime, and who it suits, before you sit down with a doctor. Every non-surgical fat treatment shares the same three conditions. If any one is missing, the result disappoints.
The same pocket can often be treated three ways. The difference is how much comes out, how fast, and at what cost in recovery.
An applicator cools the pocket for thirty-five to forty-five minutes. Removes twenty to twenty-five percent of the fat cells per session. No anaesthetic, no downtime, numb for weeks. Suits a defined pocket with elastic skin on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back or chin.
CoolSculptingDeoxycholic acid injected into the fat under the chin dissolves it over weeks. Two to four sessions a month apart. Swelling for one to two weeks after each. Suits a small to moderate submental pocket with reasonable skin.
BelkyraFat removed through a cannula under local anaesthetic, in the clinic. Removes most of the pocket in one procedure. Compression for a week, bruising for two. Suits a larger pocket, several areas at once, or a patient who wants one treatment rather than a course.
Tumescent liposuctionWhere the problem is loose skin rather than fat, removing fat makes it worse. Thermage or Fotona for mild laxity; a surgeon for more.
Skin tighteningA patient still losing weight, or one whose pocket is too small to treat cleanly, is told to come back later. The best result is the one you were promised.
Stubborn fatA clinic that owns one machine recommends that machine. A physician who offers freezing, injection and surgery under one roof can recommend whichever fits, including none of them.
The usual first choice by area, and what changes it.
Subcutaneous fat with good skin freezes well. A larger pocket, or loose skin after pregnancy, is a liposuction or surgical question.
Love handles are the classic CoolSculpting area. Liposuction when the patient wants them gone in one visit.
Small pocket: Belkyra or the chin applicator. Larger pocket or a patient who wants one procedure: liposuction.
Double chin removalInner thigh with a cup applicator, outer thigh flat. Liposuction for the saddlebag that freezing cannot reach evenly.
Small pockets where one session usually shows. Loose arm skin is a tightening or surgical question.
Fat responds to freezing or liposuction; glandular tissue does not and is referred. The distinction is made by examination.

Freezing removes a fifth to a quarter of the fat in a pocket per session and shows at three months; a second session takes a similar fraction of what remains. Belkyra removes most of a small chin pocket over two to four sessions. Liposuction removes most of a pocket in one procedure and shows over six to twelve weeks as swelling settles.
None of them change your weight, tighten loose skin, or treat fat behind the abdominal wall. Each lasts as long as your weight is stable, because the cells that remain still respond to weight gain.
Choosing well matters more than the device. A patient matched to the right option is happy; a patient sold the wrong one is not, however well it was performed.

No. They remove a fraction of the fat cells in one area and reshape a contour. The scale does not move. All of them work best on a stable weight.
About twenty to twenty-five percent of the fat cells in the treated pocket per session, visible from six weeks and complete at three months.
They treat similar pockets. Belkyra needs no applicator fit and suits small, uneven pockets; freezing treats a larger, well-defined one in fewer visits. Both give way to liposuction when the pocket is large.
For a small pocket, yes. For a large one, or several areas, liposuction removes more in one procedure than several freezing sessions. The trade is a week of compression for a larger result.
No. Removing fat under loose skin makes it look looser. Skin is assessed first, and tightening or surgery is recommended where laxity is the problem.
The removed cells do not return. The remaining cells enlarge with weight gain, so the result lasts as long as your weight does.
Freezing can rarely cause the treated fat to enlarge instead of shrinking. Belkyra can cause temporary nerve irritation and prolonged swelling. Liposuction can leave contour irregularity. Each is recognised and managed by Dr. Kuzel.
