Body treatments in Calgary

Body Treatmentsat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Body treatments are where marketing runs furthest ahead of evidence. Fat can be frozen or dissolved, skin can be tightened modestly, hair and ink can be removed, and each of those has a real result with real limits. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, assesses every patient, says plainly what a treatment will and will not do, and performs or supervises every procedure.

How to choose

Three things a body treatment can change.

Fat, skin, and what grows on or in the skin. Each is a different tissue and a different device, and none of them is a substitute for the others.

FatCold or injection destroys fat cells in a chosen area. It reshapes a contour; it does not change your weight, and it does not stop the remaining cells enlarging if weight is gained.
SkinRadiofrequency and laser contract and rebuild collagen. The result is modest, real and gradual, and suits mild laxity, not heavy sagging.
Hair and inkLasers absorbed by melanin disable hair follicles; lasers absorbed by ink shatter tattoo pigment. Both need a course, both are long-term, and both are matched to skin type by wavelength.
Fat reduction

Freezing, injection and the honest limits.

For a pocket of fat that diet and exercise do not shift, there are non-surgical answers. The consultation is about which, and whether it is worth it.

Non-surgical

CoolSculpting

Controlled cooling that destroys about a fifth to a quarter of the fat cells in the treated area per session. No downtime; results over three months.

The concern

Stubborn fat

Why some fat resists diet and exercise, and which treatments address it.

Stubborn fat
Tighten and resurface

Skin tightening without surgery.

Energy delivered to the dermis contracts and rebuilds collagen. The result is gradual and modest, and it suits mild laxity rather than heavy sagging.

Skin

Skin tightening

Thermage FLX and Fotona for mild laxity of the abdomen, arms, thighs and knees. One to a few sessions; results over six months.

Texture

Body resurfacing

Fractional laser and RF microneedling for crepe, stretch marks and texture on the chest, arms and abdomen.

Skin laxity

What tightening can and cannot do, and when a surgeon is the honest answer.

Skin laxity
Hair and ink

Laser hair removal and tattoo removal.

Two of the most reliable results in the clinic, provided the laser is matched to the skin.

Hair

Laser hair removal

GentleMax Pro Plus with alexandrite and Nd:YAG, so every skin type is treated on the right wavelength. Six to eight sessions.

Why a dermatologist

Body treatments are sold hardest and explained least.

The gap between what a body device promises and what it delivers is wider than anywhere else in aesthetics. A physician who has no stake in the machine closes that gap.

CandidacyFat freezing suits a pinchable pocket on a stable weight; it does nothing for general weight and it can leave a contour worse in the wrong patient. Dr. Kuzel says who is and is not a candidate.
Skin type and laserHair and tattoo removal in darker skin need the right wavelength and settings, or they burn. The clinic keeps the devices for every skin type and sets them for the patient.
Honest expectationsTightening is modest. Fat freezing takes three months and a fifth of the fat. Each is stated before treatment, not discovered after.
Complications managedParadoxical fat growth after cryolipolysis, burns, pigment change and folliculitis are recognised and managed by the doctor.
Your visit

Assessment, an honest answer, then a plan.

Body treatments start with a consultation, because the first question is whether the treatment will do what you want.

ConsultationWhat you want to change, your weight history, skin type, medications, and any history of keloids, cold sensitivity or hernias.
ExaminationDr. Kuzel examines the area, pinches and measures where relevant, and photographs it.
RecommendationThe treatment, the number of sessions, the expected result and its limits, with alternatives including doing nothing. Prices are confirmed.
TreatmentPerformed in the clinic. Most body treatments need no anaesthetic.
Follow-upPhotographs at the interval each treatment needs, usually three months for fat and six for tightening.
Fees and coverage

What is covered and what is not.

Assessment of a medical condition, such as folliculitis or recurrent boils, is covered with a referral from your family physician, and some laser hair removal for medical indications may be.

Questions

Questions about body treatments, answered.

Will CoolSculpting help me lose weight?

No. It removes a fifth to a quarter of the fat cells in a treated pocket and reshapes a contour. It does not change your weight, and it works best on a stable weight.

How much do body treatments cost in Calgary?

Each is priced by area and session and quoted at consultation. Body treatments are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It is long-term. A course of six to eight sessions removes most hair in the area for years, with occasional maintenance for the fine regrowth that hormones drive.

Is laser safe for darker skin?

Yes, on the right wavelength. Nd:YAG is used for hair removal and vessels in darker skin, and PicoWay for tattoos. Dr. Kuzel sets every treatment for the skin type.

Does skin tightening replace a tummy tuck or arm lift?

No. Non-surgical tightening gives a modest improvement in mild laxity. Heavy or loose skin needs a surgeon, and Dr. Kuzel says so.

How many tattoo removal sessions will I need?

Usually six to twelve, eight weeks apart, depending on the ink colours, depth and age of the tattoo. Amateur and faded tattoos clear fastest.

What are the risks of fat freezing?

Temporary numbness, bruising and tenderness are common. Rarely, the treated fat enlarges instead of shrinking, which is recognised at follow-up and managed. Candidacy assessment reduces the risk.

Who performs the treatment?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, assesses every patient and performs or directly supervises every treatment. He sees patients in English and Czech.
