Juvedermat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Juvederm is a family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers used to restore volume, define contours and soften folds in the face. Each product in the range is made for a different depth and purpose. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, selects the product and performs every injection himself.

What it is

Hyaluronic acid, and how filler works.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that the body makes naturally to hold water in the skin. Juvederm is hyaluronic acid cross-linked into a smooth gel that holds its shape after injection.

Volume and structurePlaced on bone or deep in the fat of the face, filler replaces the volume lost with age and restores the support that lifts the skin above it. Placed more superficially, it fills a fold or defines a border such as the lip.
ReversibleHyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme, within minutes. That reversibility is the principal safety advantage of hyaluronic acid over other filler types.
DurationThe body breaks the gel down slowly. Firmer products in the cheeks and jaw last eighteen to twenty-four months; softer products in the lips and fine lines last nine to twelve. The result fades gradually rather than ending.
The Juvederm range

One family, several products.

The products differ in firmness and in how they are made to behave in tissue. Selecting the right one for the depth and the area is most of the skill.

Firm

Voluma

The firmest product, placed deep on bone in the cheeks, temples and chin to restore structure and lift. Lasts up to two years.

Firmest

Volux

Made for the jawline and chin, where a sharp edge is wanted. Defines the jaw and corrects a receding chin. Lasts up to two years.

Medium

Volift

For the nasolabial folds, marionette lines and mid-depth volume, and for lips where fuller shape is wanted. Lasts twelve to eighteen months.

Soft

Volbella

A fine, soft gel for the lips, the vertical lines around the mouth and the under-eye hollow. Lasts around twelve months.

Skin quality

Volite

Injected in many tiny deposits into the skin itself rather than beneath it, to improve hydration, smoothness and fine lines on the face, neck and hands. Not a volumising product.

Alternatives

Other hyaluronic acid fillers

Restylane and Revanesse are comparable ranges with their own characteristics. Dr. Kuzel uses all three and selects by area and patient.

Restylane
Why a dermatologist

Anatomy, safety and restraint.

Filler is placed among the arteries, nerves and muscles of the face. The result depends on where it goes and how much is used, and the risk depends on knowing what lies beneath.

Vascular safetyThe arteries of the face run close to the surface at the nose, the glabella, the temples and the lips. Filler injected into one can block it. Dr. Kuzel knows the anatomy, injects with cannula where it is safer, and keeps hyaluronidase in the room.
Product selectionEach area has a product suited to it. Soft product in the cheek does not lift; firm product in the lip looks and feels wrong. Dr. Kuzel has the whole range on hand and chooses for the tissue.
RestraintMost overfilled faces are the result of treating the fold rather than its cause, or adding volume year on year without assessing what is already there. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reassesses before adding.
CoverageJuvederm is cosmetic and not covered by Alberta Health Care. Pricing is by syringe and is quoted at consultation before any treatment.
Areas treated

Where Juvederm is used.

Most patients are treated in one or two areas. Where several areas contribute to the same concern, they are planned together.

Structure

Cheeks and midface

Restoring the volume that flattens with age lifts the midface and softens the folds below it.

Cheek filler
Structure

Jawline and chin

A defined jaw and a chin in proportion to the rest of the face, using the firmest products.

Definition

Lips

Shape, border and hydration first; volume only where wanted.

Lip filler
Hollows

Under eyes and temples

Hollowing that reads as tiredness, treated with soft product placed deep and in small amounts.

Under eye filler
Folds

Nasolabial and marionette lines

Treated directly where they are deep, and indirectly by restoring the cheek above them.

Skin

Hands, neck and skin quality

Volite for skin hydration and texture; hand rejuvenation for the volume lost on the back of the hands.

Your visit

Consultation and treatment in one visit.

A filler appointment takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Treatment is usually performed at the first visit once the plan is agreed.

ConsultationWhat concerns you, your medical history, previous filler, and any upcoming events or dental work.
AssessmentDr. Kuzel assesses the face as a whole, not the fold in isolation, and identifies what is causing the concern.
Plan and consentProduct, areas, amount, expected result, duration and risks. The price is confirmed before treatment.
InjectionTopical anaesthetic is applied; the product also contains lidocaine. Injection by needle or cannula, ten to thirty minutes.
Follow-upReview at two weeks once swelling has settled, with adjustment if needed.
Aftercare and safety

What to expect after injection.

Swelling and bruising are the normal side effects. Serious complications are rare and are managed immediately.

After treatment

  • Swelling for two to five days, more in the lips; bruising, if any, for up to a week
  • Firmness or small lumps in the first two weeks as the gel settles; massage only if instructed
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and pressure on the area for 24 to 48 hours
  • Postpone dental work for two weeks before and after
  • Makeup can be applied the next day
  • Contact the clinic immediately for skin that turns white, mottled or dusky, or unusual pain: these are signs of a blocked vessel and are treated at once
  • Not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with active infection at the site

What to expect

Expected outcomes.

The result is visible immediately and looks its best at two weeks, once swelling has gone and the gel has integrated. A well-planned treatment restores what has been lost rather than adding what was never there, so the face looks rested rather than changed.

Duration depends on the product and the area. Cheek, chin and jaw treatment with the firm products lasts eighteen to twenty-four months. Lips and folds with the softer products last nine to eighteen months. The result fades slowly, and many patients top up before it has gone rather than starting again.

Filler does not treat skin texture, pigment or lines of expression. Those are treated with resurfacing, laser and neuromodulators, often in the same plan.

Questions

Questions about Juvederm, answered.

How much does Juvederm cost in Calgary?

Juvederm is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation. The number of syringes depends on the area and the degree of volume loss; a lip treatment is usually one syringe, cheeks two or more. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

How long does Juvederm last?

Nine to twenty-four months depending on the product and the area. Firm products in the cheeks, chin and jaw last longest; softer products in the lips and fine lines the least. The result fades gradually.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment, and Juvederm products contain lidocaine, so discomfort is mild. Lips are the most sensitive area. Cannula injection, used where appropriate, reduces both discomfort and bruising.

Will it look natural?

When the right product is placed in the right plane in the right amount, yes. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause of the concern rather than the fold itself, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reassesses at two weeks before adding more.

Can it be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler is dissolved with hyaluronidase within minutes. This is used for the rare vascular complication and, less often, to correct a result the patient is unhappy with, including filler placed elsewhere.

What are the risks?

Swelling, bruising and temporary lumps are common and resolve. Infection and delayed nodules are uncommon. The serious risk is injection into a blood vessel, which can damage skin or, very rarely, vision; it is rare, is minimised by anatomical knowledge and technique, and is treated immediately with hyaluronidase.

Juvederm or Restylane?

Both are hyaluronic acid ranges of comparable quality. They differ in how the gel is made and behaves; Juvederm products tend to be smoother and Restylane products slightly firmer at equivalent grades. Dr. Kuzel uses both and chooses by area and tissue rather than by brand.

Can I combine Juvederm with Botox?

Yes, and the combination is common. Neuromodulators treat lines of expression; filler treats volume and structure. They address different problems and are often planned together.

How soon can I have it before an event?

Two weeks ahead allows swelling to settle and any adjustment to be made. Lips swell most and benefit from the full two weeks.

Who performs the injections?
