Laser hair removal in Calgary

Laser Hair Removalat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Laser hair removal is one of the most reliable results in dermatology, provided the wavelength matches the skin. Light absorbed by the pigment in the hair heats and disables the follicle; the same light absorbed by pigment in the skin causes a burn. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, sets every treatment on the GentleMax Pro Plus, which carries both the alexandrite laser for fair skin and the Nd:YAG for dark, so every skin type is treated on the right wavelength.

How it works

Light absorbed by pigment disables the follicle.

The laser does not see hair. It sees melanin, and it heats whatever holds it.

The pulseA millisecond of light at a wavelength melanin absorbs travels down the hair shaft into the follicle and heats it enough to stop it producing hair. Dark, coarse hair absorbs most and responds best. White, grey and very fine blonde hair hold too little pigment to treat.
The cycleOnly follicles in their growth phase are disabled. At any moment a fraction of hair is growing, so a course of sessions four to eight weeks apart catches each follicle in turn. Six to eight sessions clear most areas.
The skinSkin also holds melanin. A wavelength and pulse that are safe on fair skin burn darker skin, which is why the choice of laser is the whole safety question, and why every patient is assessed before the first pulse.
Two wavelengths

Alexandrite for fair skin, Nd:YAG for dark.

One platform, two lasers, one decision made by the physician for each patient.

755 nm

Alexandrite

Strongly absorbed by melanin, so it clears fair and olive skin quickly with fewer sessions. Too strongly absorbed to be safe on dark skin.

1064 nm

Nd:YAG

Absorbed less by melanin, so it passes through darker skin safely and still heats the follicle. The laser for brown and black skin, and for tanned skin.

Not here

IPL and home devices

Broad-spectrum light is weaker on hair and riskier on darker skin. The clinic uses lasers, not IPL, for hair removal.

Light hair

Electrolysis

White, grey and fine blonde hair have no target for a laser. Electrolysis treats them one follicle at a time, and is referred where needed.

GentleMax Pro Plus
Why a dermatologist

The burn risk lives in the settings.

Hair removal burns and pigment marks come from the wrong wavelength, the wrong fluence, or a tan nobody asked about. A physician assessing skin type removes all three.

Skin typingFitzpatrick type, recent sun, and any history of pigment change after injury decide which laser and which energy. Dr. Kuzel assesses and sets the parameters.
The hair that should not be laseredSudden coarse facial hair in a woman can be a sign of a hormonal condition. It is examined and investigated before it is treated.
Paradoxical hypertrichosisRarely, fine hair at the edge of a treated area on the face or neck grows thicker. It is recognised and managed rather than mistaken for treatment failure.
Ingrown hair and folliculitisFor recurrent ingrown hairs and razor bumps, laser is a medical treatment, and a dermatologist treats the inflammation alongside the hair.
Areas treated

Face, underarms, bikini, legs, back and chest.

Any area with dark hair, from a few square centimetres to a full back.

Face

Upper lip, chin and jaw

Small areas treated in minutes. Hormonal hair may need more sessions and maintenance.

Commonest

Underarms and bikini

Dense, dark hair on relatively pale skin, so among the fastest to clear. Ingrown hairs resolve with the hair.

Large areas

Legs and arms

Full legs in about forty-five minutes with the large spot size of the GentleMax Pro Plus.

Men

Back, shoulders and chest

Coarse, dense hair that responds well. Settings for male hair and skin.

Neck and beard

Razor bumps

Removing the hair removes the cause. The definitive treatment for pseudofolliculitis of the beard and neck.

Medical

Recurrent boils and folliculitis

Where repeated infections start at the hair follicle, removing the hair removes the trigger, as part of a medical plan.

Your visit

Skin type, a test spot, then a course.

Sessions take ten to sixty minutes depending on the area, four to eight weeks apart.

ConsultationWhich areas, your skin type and sun habits, medications that sensitise to light, and any history of cold sores, keloids or pigment change.
AssessmentDr. Kuzel examines the skin and hair, chooses alexandrite or Nd:YAG, sets the energy, and treats a test spot where the skin is darker or has tanned.
TreatmentShaved the day before. Eye protection. The handpiece cools the skin with cryogen spray before each pulse. Each pulse feels like a snapped elastic band.
Between sessionsHair sheds over one to three weeks. Shave as needed; never wax or pluck.
Course and maintenanceSix to eight sessions, then a session every six to twelve months for the fine regrowth that hormones drive.
Before and after

Shave, no sun, no plucking.

The preparation matters as much as the pulse. A tan or a plucked follicle undoes the treatment.

Before and after each session

  • No waxing, plucking, threading or epilating for four weeks before and throughout the course; the laser needs the hair in the follicle
  • Shave the area the day before, and stop any self-tanner two weeks before
  • No sun or tanning beds for two weeks before and after; a tan changes the safe settings
  • Redness and bumps around the follicles for a few hours to a day; cool compresses and a plain moisturiser
  • No hot baths, saunas, exercise or fragranced products on the area for twenty-four hours
  • SPF 50 on treated areas that see sun, for the whole course
  • Tell the clinic about any new medication, especially antibiotics, retinoids and photosensitising drugs
  • Contact the clinic for blistering, or for redness that lasts beyond two days

Booking and fees

Cosmetic laser hair removal is not covered by Alberta Health Care. It is priced per area per session, with course pricing, and quoted at consultation. Assessment of hirsutism, folliculitis or hidradenitis is covered with a referral, and laser for those conditions is discussed at the visit.

What to expect

Most hair gone in six to eight sessions.

Hair sheds a week or two after each session and the area is smoother and sparser with each one. After a course, most dark hair in the treated area is gone and what returns is finer and lighter. The result lasts years, with a maintenance session every six to twelve months for many patients.

It is long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. Hormonal areas, such as the chin and jaw in women, need more sessions and more maintenance. White, grey and fine blonde hair do not respond.

On the right wavelength, darker skin clears as well as fair skin and with the same safety, which is why the choice of laser is made by a physician for every patient.

Questions

Questions about laser hair removal, answered.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Calgary?

It is priced per area per session, with course pricing, and quoted at consultation. Cosmetic hair removal is not covered by Alberta Health Care. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

Is it permanent?

It is long-term hair reduction. After a course most dark hair is gone for years, with a maintenance session every six to twelve months for the fine regrowth that hormones drive.

Is it safe for dark skin?

Yes, on the Nd:YAG laser, which passes through the pigment in the skin and still heats the follicle. Dr. Kuzel assesses skin type and chooses the wavelength for every patient.

Does it hurt?

Each pulse feels like a snapped elastic band. The handpiece cools the skin with cryogen spray before every pulse, and small areas are over in minutes. Topical anaesthetic is available for sensitive areas.

How many sessions will I need?

Six to eight for most areas, four to eight weeks apart. Hormonal facial hair may need more.

Does it work on blonde, grey or red hair?

Not reliably. The laser needs pigment in the hair. White, grey and fine blonde hair are better treated by electrolysis.

Can I wax between sessions?

No. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the hair the laser needs. Shave instead.

Can I have it done with a tan?

Not on the alexandrite. Tanned skin is treated on the Nd:YAG at adjusted settings, or after the tan has faded. Avoid sun for two weeks before each session.

Will it help ingrown hairs and razor bumps?

Yes. Removing the hair removes the cause. It is the definitive treatment for recurrent folliculitis of the beard, neck and bikini line.

Who performs the treatment?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, assesses every patient, sets every treatment and directly supervises the procedure. He sees patients in English and Czech.
