CO2 laser resurfacing removes the damaged outer skin and heats the layer beneath it so that new, tighter, smoother skin grows in its place. It is the procedure for deep wrinkles, marked sun damage and scars that no lighter treatment will reach, and it asks for a week of recovery in return. The carbon dioxide laser vaporises skin with a controlled margin of heat. How much of the surface is treated, and how deep, is the whole decision.
CO2 resurfacing is the right answer for a particular kind of skin and a particular kind of patient. For the rest, there is something better.

Once the pinkness settles, the skin is smoother, tighter and more evenly coloured. Lip lines and crow's feet are markedly softened, sun spots and precancer are gone, and scars are flatter. Collagen continues to build for six months, and the result at three months is close to final.
One treatment is enough for most patients, and it holds for years. Skin keeps ageing from the new baseline, and the result is protected with sun avoidance and maintained with lighter treatments.
Resurfacing does not lift jowls or a heavy neck, does not restore lost volume, and does not erase every line. Where those are the goals, tightening, filler or surgery are discussed alongside or instead. Some patients are left with a small area that heals lighter than the surrounding skin; this is discussed before treatment.

Seven to ten days off work. Weeping and swelling for the first three days, peeling to day seven, then pink new skin that makeup covers from about day ten. Pinkness fades over four to twelve weeks.
The procedure is performed under nerve blocks, topical anaesthetic and oral sedation, and most patients feel pressure and heat rather than pain. The first two days afterward feel like a severe sunburn and are managed with soaks, ointment and simple analgesics.
Fractional for almost everyone: faster healing, lower risk, very good result. Fully ablative for the most severe lip and eye lines, where the extra result justifies the longer recovery. Dr. Kuzel recommends at consultation, often mixing both across the face.
CO2 carries the highest pigmentation risk of any laser in darker skin. Some patients can have conservative fractional treatment with prescription preparation; for others erbium or non-ablative treatment is the safer choice. This is an individual decision.
Most patients need one. Deep scars and severe damage may need a second a year later. Lighter treatments maintain the result.
Yes. Neuromodulators before resurfacing reduce muscle pull on healing skin. Filler is placed before or after, not during healing. Subcision precedes resurfacing for tethered scars. Resurfacing is sometimes combined with a surgical lift.
Infection, cold sore reactivation, prolonged redness, and pigment change that is temporary in most and permanent in a few. Scarring is rare with correct settings. Every risk is reduced by preparation, physician technique and close follow-up.
Years. The skin continues to age from a better baseline, and sun protection is what preserves the result.
