Over time our skin’s supply of collagen depletes, causing diminished elasticity, moisture and tone. Restoring collagen is often the most important goal in any cosmetic treatment – this protein provides the cellular structure of our skin, making it appear voluminous and hydrated. Thermage® radiofrequency therapy helps do just that.
Thermage® is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that treats fine lines and wrinkles, and can improve the appearance of cellulite. It’s a method that’s tried and tested. Since its launch in 2002 as the original tissue tightening device in the USA, more than two million Thermage® treatments have been performed.
Thermage® uses radio frequency technology to heat the underlying collagen-rich layers of the skin while the tip of the applicator vibrates and cools the skin’s surface to help keep you comfortable. The heat separates the water molecules from the collagen, causing small contractions that result in skin tightening.
After treatment, the patient’s collagen continues to remodel and grow over the course of six months, tightening the skin along the way. For most patients, results appear gradually over the following two to six months and results can last up to two years (depending on skin condition and the aging process).
Thermage® can be used to address issues from head to toe. Treatments on the face and neck can improve jawline definition, decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and soften hooded eyes. A treatment on the body can improve the appearance of loose and crepey skin on areas like the knees and abdomen and smooth cellulite and laxity on the stomach, hips, thighs and buttox.
Before beginning the Thermage® treatment, we’ll cleanse the treatment areas and apply a thin layer of protective gel. As we place a handpiece flat on the target area, you can expect to feel a brief heat sensation, followed by a cooling and vibrating sensation, which protects your skin’s outer layers and minimizes discomfort. A treatment session for body areas can take 70 minutes or more, while the face and neck take about 45–60 minutes.
After treatment, temporary redness or minor swelling in the treatment area is normal. It typically subsides within 24 hours. Most patients can get back to their daily activities immediately and no special care is required other than basic skin maintenance broad-spectrum sunscreen use with an SPF of at least 30.
Unlike some skin treatments, Thermage® doesn’t require any special preparation. You don’t have to stop drinking, avoid NSAID medications or discontinue skincare products with retinol.
However, be sure to let Dr. Kuzel know if you’ve recently had a chemical peel or treatment that provides controlled damage to the outer layer of skin. You will need to give your skin time to heal before scheduling your Thermage® appointment.
