People have been seeking out the perfect pout for millennia. In ancient times, women used natural substances like beeswax, plant extracts, and even crushed insects to add colour and volume to their lips. By the 1950s, women were using paraffin for lip injections. Silicone injections were next up. Fortunately, we’ve gotten a lot smarter about pretty pouts.
Since the 1990s, lip fillers have been made using hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance in your body. HA fillers have proven themselves as the gold-standard approach through decades of safe, effective and natural-looking results.
Few procedures are as tied to the image of ‘overdone’ cosmetic procedures as lip filler. The cliché image of over-injected, protruding ‘duck lips’ have steered many people away from lip injections. However, when administered with skill and reserve, lip fillers can plump your pout and enhance your facial features, and no one will be the wiser.
As an experienced dermatologist, Dr. Kuzel is skilled in the safe, precise, natural application of filler injections for results that say born-with-it.
Full, pouty lips have long been associated with vitality and sensuality. And whether you’ve always had thin, flat lips or want to add volume to lips that have lost definition and shape with age, lip fillers can deliver the full lips you're looking to achieve.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) lip fillers are a type of dermal filler that adds volume and shape to the lips. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps to hydrate and plump the skin. When HA filler is injected into the lips, it attracts water molecules and creates a volumizing effect that lasts 12 to 18 months.
Once you and Dr. Kuzel have discussed a treatment plan and the results you’re looking for, your procedure can begin. Dr. Kuzel or his nurse will cleanse the treatment area to remove makeup and apply a bit of numbing cream. After this takes effect, Dr. Kuzel will methodically apply the filler to the different areas of the lips using a fine needle or a cannula. The procedure typically takes between 15-20 minutes.
Lip injections pose few risks or side effects. However, the most common side effects include minor bruising, swelling and tenderness around the injected sites. These usually resolve within the first 24 to 48 hours.
Results from lip fillers can last 12 to 18 months, depending on the type of filler used and the individual's metabolism. Because hyaluronic acid is metabolized over time, many patients prefer to return halfway through to maintain the volume. You’ll know when it’s time.
Within a few days of your appointment, we’ll check in to see how you’re doing. If this is your first treatment, Dr. Kuzel or his team will set a follow-up to assess your results. We’ll send you home with contact information in case you need to follow up.
Before your visit, avoid alcohol the day before, avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen and fish oil (Omega-3’s), and Vitamin E for 10 to 14 days before and drink plenty of water. Always discuss any history of allergies and current medications you are taking with your treatment provider. Be sure to cancel your appointment if you develop a rash or cold sore on your lips.
